According to the manual this a backup battery problem. Oce only sells the board.
Anyone have a replacement or know if a regular 3v lithium battery will work?

Call Doug Smith Parts for a replacement battery. The reason they only spare the board is that the battery is soldered in place and OCE doesn't trust their guys ability to solder properly...... _________________ Regards,

I hadn't heard that Doug retired. If he has the third party guys doing 9800's have a problem. That leaves Costal Imaging and a couple of others. I know Tech Parts in Anaheim does power supplies and some board repair so if Doug has wandered off they might be able to help. _________________ Regards,

No, I talked to him about this. Like the rest of us he is just dreaming of retirement.
I talked to Will at Coastal Imaging and he looked into getting the board itself. According to him Oce has discontinued that part. It is now in the obsolete category. We have known for a while the 9800's were coming to end of life, but it looks like it is here.
I know there are places to get used parts, and many of the parts are the same as the TDS800, but when you can't get new boards it may be time to look at alternatives.

That's why some shops are buying 9800's and stripping them for parts. I've seen 9800's for 3 or 4k and that yeilds a bunch of hard to get parts for cheap. Did you check with Tech Parts ? _________________ Regards,

Tech parts were out until next week, but I did find one.
OK, really I realized I had one from a 9800 we bought a while back for parts. I thought I had already used it. The guys in the shop are accusing me of being disorganized and senile. Unluckily they are right!

So the battery in the other board failed and started throwing codes.
So I got out the soldering iron and soldered in a battery pack for a cordless phone onto the board. Rayovac 3.6v 700mah NiMH battery pack, part # RAY87.
Works perfectly. _________________ Any ideas expressed are figments of my imagination.

Improvise, adapt and overcome. Nice fix. Does the new battery spec out the same? _________________ Regards,

Voltage is the same, the amp hours is a lot higher (700 mAh as opposed to 250 mAh) but really won't matter. It just means I can leave it unplugged for a few years and still have my settings!
