The strips create an apperature, better controlling the image. _________________ Regards,

Only a guess but logic would suggest that the colors have different reflectivety. "Back in the day" before things were controlled by a computer, many machines had swapable apertures to control exposure. Those strips can also control stray light. I didn't ask, is the glass scratched? Sometimes the scratch won't show after shading is done. _________________ Regards,

a gray card is used in photograpy to get correct light exposure so I would say the gray strips on scanner glass are to aid in color balance and constant image exposure. the black is to eliminate refraction of light _________________ Ride To Live |

Excellant thinking Chaz. That might explain part of the high cost. Gray reference cards are expensive to print correctly and the density has to be spot on. _________________ Regards,

FYI
I have a local glass shop make the same piece of glass for me without the grey strips and they work fine. I've been using them for years with no problem. Don't pay $700 when you can get it for $30. |

Yeah, just get the same thickness and have them bevel the edges and you are good to go. |
