The lamp on the scanner for a 9800 won't light. I has been intermittant for a while and we would just turn it back and forth in the socket a couple of times and it would light. Sometimes it was just a matter of turning the machine on and off a couple of times without touching the lamp. Now it won't light at all. We changed the lamp. Is there a voltage missing or could it need new sockets? Mark in Vegas, if you are out there I could use some help. I posted this so maybe it might help others that may have the same trouble.
Thanks,
David

It's real easy to miss the contacts in the end caps when installing the lamp. Make sure the heaters are glowing when in standby. There isn't much that can cause issues; lamp, connectors and power supply. If the heaters are glowing I believe you can fire the lamp through SDS. I'll check and update this.

lamp connectors/sockets may be burned

new connectors may correct the issue or a new power supply (10G1) located in back of scanner may be required

Where do I look to see if the heaters are glowing. Also, I tried the TL Intensity Adjust through SDS and it failed. The lamp never came on. Thanks for all the help. I will keep watching this forum for more help.

You can fire the lamp from SDS. I'd spend my time time with the sockets and make sure both pins(each end) are contacting both contacts in the connector. I would also reseat the connectors on the mixed supply and the scan board. To be honest I never had an issue with anything on the scanner except the lamp (That I didn't cause myself) and the o-ring.

Ok, Thanks "EL". I appreciate the help. I will double check all of those things and let you know what happens.

In most any flourscent tube the heaters are located just inside the tube behind the connector. They are there to keep the gas warm making the lamp easier to fire.

I reset all the mixed power supply connectors. I think I have a bad power supply because I noticed the fan did not run. Then I touched it and gave it a spin, then it worked when I turned the machine on but still no lamp. It must have burnt something out when the fan was not running. I am going to replace the supply with another one that I have and see if the problem corrects itself.
Thanks,
David

I also found a very slightly rounded capacitor. It's not real bad but it is a little rounder than the rest of them. It's one of the caps that is in that whole group of caps that sits under the fan. Not sure if it really means anything or not.

Have you swapped in the other PS yet? When caps start to swell on a motherboard things get crazy so it stands to reason that the same thing would happen to a PS.

No I have not switched it yet. The supply is from a scanner that I have in our other office. I go on vacation tomorrow and all of next week. My guy here said not to worry about it until I got back. We still have the other machine we can scan on and we will just use this one to send prints from the computer. I wonder if I replaced that cap if it would fix it or does it have other problems as well. Just a thought.

If your guy said don't worry about it, don't. Go on vacation!

Changed power supply and now the lamp works. Yeah!!!! Having some other minor image issues like leading edge not printing where we want it to but at least we can use the scanner now. The other crazy thing that happened at the same time was the compressor stopped working. All of a sudden we had blank sheets. Filled it with oil and away we go. I hope this thing runs ok while I am on vacation. Thanks for everybody's help. "EL" I will talk to you soon. Thanks again.

Well done sir! The lead edge adjustment isn't difficult. If replacing the cap doesn't restore the PS there are a couple places that do rebuilds. As to the compressor, that's why they put a window in them...Smile Now, go on vacation at once.
