This is driving us nuts.
We have had 3 designjet 4xx plotters that can't find the mark encoder sensor. The carriage is moving too far to the left by about a half an inch.
The list of parts replaced is as follows:
carriage assy
trailing cable
encoder strip
E-mod
carriage drive motor
belt
Any ideas on this one??
Carriage bar is clean and using Geniune HP "gold" oil! |

Have you cleaned the bottom of the carriage assembly? Overspray from the ink can fog up the lens and it won't see the encoder. Also check the encoder strip that it is not damaged. Is the drive roller nice and clean (black). This can also give a false reading between black and white. _________________ Everytime something is made idiot proof... the world creates a better idiot! |

Yes, I've even tried a new carriage assy. And a new encoder strip that looks great.
The carriage doesen't even rest over the dreive roller. It looks nice too. But the carriage goes too far over to the left. It doesen't even "shine" on the mark encoder. It "shines" on the frame, a half an inch to the left of the mark encoder. |

Check the service station home position. It sounds like the service station is not seated properly. The machine will think it is, but when it couts over to the encoder it goes too far. Try loosening the service station and moving it out 1/4 or so then try it again. _________________ Everytime something is made idiot proof... the world creates a better idiot! |

I know this sounds crazy, but can you move the carriage all the way to the left manually without the carriage ribbon cable becoming tight and stopping carriage travel. I had this once and the carriage ribbon cable was not fastened, looped around the left side of the ribbon cable holder bracket correctly on the carriage.
Hope this helps. |
